• wp-spamfree comments log 403 forbidden fix

My wordpress blog has wp-spamfree installed and protecting me from spam comments.

It does a great job and I heartily recommend it.

One of the features is a log file with the contents of any spam comments so you can check for false positives or to see just how much spam your blog is being protected from.
The log file defaults to [yourserver]/wp-content/plugins/wp-spamfree/data/temp-comments-log.txt

I tried to read mine but I got a 403 forbidden error and couldn’t figure out why, I had a standard install.

I tracked it down to the .htaccess file in /wp-content/plugins/wp-spamfree/data/ which has
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer http://labby\.co\.uk/wordpress/wp-admin/ wpsf_access
SetEnvIf Remote_Addr ^my.ip.address$ wpsf_access

order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from env=wpsf_access
Insert the line with my.ip.address above and add your own IP address, save and you should be up and running.

• I am now an official Fedora Ambassador

Through selling linux DVDs on ebay I virtually met an interesting person with a big future ahead of him.

This person is an Ambassador for the Fedora Project, and is a very proactive member of the team.

His dedication inspired me to look into becoming a Fedora Ambassador myself so I set the ball in motion.

I chatted to several people on IRC freenode #fedora-uk and #fedora-ambassadors and contacted a local mentor, a very knowledgeable and commited person himself (that is a definite thread running through Fedora).

I chatted about my background, what I could bring to the Fedora Project and it was decided that I had the potential to become a Fedora Ambassador.

I will try to live up to the honour proffered to me and am currently studying hard to be all that I can be.

• Yet another email spammer identified

Another day, another unknown email spammer brought down.

Gregory –
Regardless of how the rest of your day goes, here’s something to be happy
about — today one of your donated MXs helped to identify a previously
unknown email harvester (IP: 92.26.102.158). The harvester was
caught a spam trap email address created with your donated MX:

mail2.labby.co.uk

You can find information about your newly identified harvester here:

• wordpress, google translate and <code>

Hands up if you use a plugin for automatically converting your wordpress blog content to other languages.

Now keep your hands up if you add scripts to your blog that google happily munches through and translates for you.

For those of you loyal readers beginning to get sore arms here is the solution which will only take a moment.

Go to your wordpress install directory

Edit the file wp-includes/js/quicktags.js

do a find and replace for "<code>", replace with "<code class=notranslate>", including the ”

There should be 2 occurrences in the file.

Save the file and you are done.

You will need to edit any existing posts in your database to change the contents of wp_posts again replacing <code> with <code class=notranslate> a simple php/mysql script would achieve this if you have a large blog.

If you can’t come up with your own php script to do this, leave me a comment and I will write one.

• Playstation 3 PS3 firmware update 3.21 bypass

Want to keep your OtherOS functionality and use PSN too?

All you have to do is make your primary DNS 67.202.81.137 and your ps3 will be able to connect to PSN without any updates.

No need for proxies or anything else :D

Want to keep your OtherOS functionality and use PSN too?
Here’s how:
On your PS3, sign out of PSN
Download and install PS3.ProxyServer.GUI here: http://www.mediafire.com/?ywnmy1wykzi
It doesn’t create shortcuts so navigate to C:\Program Files\CF3B5\PS3.ProxyServer and run PS3.ProxyServer.GUI.exe
Type your current LOCAL IP ADDRESS (probably 192.168.*.*), you can leave the port as 8080, check PS3 Mode
Whatever port you use must be open on your router, so if 8080 is blocked, open it now
Go to the Replace Files tab and click Add
In the left box, paste this address:
http://fus01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/list/us/ps3-updatelist.txt
In the right box, click browse and find your LOCAL COPY of the 3.15 ps3-updatelist.txt file, download from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?dyjldy24yod
Back to the Proxy Settings tab, click Start
From your PS3’s XMB, go to Settings, Network Settings, then Internet Connection Settings
Keep everything the way you have it configured now except for the Proxy Server option, make sure you click Use
Type the IP address and port number to your local computer (from step 4 above)
Finish configuring, test connection, make sure it connects
That’s it. If the connection test works, you can now sign into PSN with 3.15 and bypass the 3.21 firmware check
Note that you must keep PS3.ProxyServer.GUI running when you want to use your PS3 until we get Custom Firmware

• Playstation 3 PS3 firmware update 3.21

I am guessing that I am not the only male in the world currently having major rows with his wife because of Sony’s latest firmware update.

I bought a 250GB PS3 slim and took it back to the shop because it does not have the OtherOS functionality, then paid the same amount for a PS3 60GB that did have the functionality.

This morning my wife came to play Final Fantasy XIII and was told she needed to do a firmware update to enable the Playstation Network. I just happened to glance up and see that the firmware update would remove the OtherOS functionality and told her to stop immediately. Argument 1 – never tell a woman to stop.

I sent Sony a complaint:

Your latest firmware update 3.21 has crippled the usage of my PS3. I use the otheros functionality on a daily basis and my wife uses the playstation network.
Your update means that one or the other of us cannot use the PS3 for the use it was purchased for.
I will be fully investigating my rights as a consumer because your company has purposefully removed a feature that was a major part of the reason I purchased the console in the first place.

I fully intend to do as I told them – I will be researching the sale of goods act carefully and consulting my local Trading Standards and Citizen’s Advice Bureau.

I know this is a knee-jerk reaction to the hypervisor exploit that has been released, but I don’t see why I as a legitimate consumer should lose functionality because someone finally cracked the gaming system.

This to me feels like Sony throwing their dummy out of their pram because things are not going their way.

When it comes down to it if we consider the age of the OtherOS capable PS3s we are a minority – not an insignificant number but there must be more of the new slimline users out there than the old machines simply considering the likelihood of failures over time.

I am not a Sony fanboy nor a Microsoft one. I have a Wii, PS3, xbox 360 and don’t play any of them – I much prefer my PC which runs Linux. I have set up the PS3 for my child to learn to use a computer before I actually buy him his own PC.

• ubuntu numpad moves mouse cursor

Somehow, somewhere along the line my number pad stopped working as a number pad and instead started controlling the mouse cursor (in Windows it is referred to as mousekeys).

I use my number pad on a very regular basis and soon became extremely frustrated at this.

Here’s the solution:

System – Preferences – Assistive Technologies

Keyboard Accessibility

Mouse Keys

Clear the checkbox [ ] Pointer can be controlled using the keypad

No need to reboot, it is instantaneous and sticky across reboots.

I have just had a second IP for my web server and wish to use it for a dedicated domain name.

Here is how you configure apache2 to serve requests on that IP to a specific virtualhost

assumptions:

new IP is 192.168.1.2

new website is called newip.labby.co.uk

<VirtualHost 192.168.1.2>

UseCanonicalName Off

ServerName newip.labby.co.uk

ServerAlias *.newip.labby.co.uk

• Adding a new IP to eth0 eth0:0

My server has multiple failover IP addresses.

Mainly so I don’t forget, here is how to add a new failover IP under ubuntu (and I would assume any debian based distribution of linux):

ssh into the server

sudo jed /etc/network/interfaces  (jed or whatever your editor of choice is)

find the line that starts

auth lo eth0

and add the eth0:0 (or whatever) part to that line

Mine now reads

auto lo eth0 eth0:0 eth0:1

You now need to add the virtual eth port.

For this you need the new IP (I will use 192.168.1.22 in my example)

You will also need to call the new port something (I will use eth0:0)

You also need the broadcast address (I will use 192.168.1.255)

You will also need the netmask (this is generally 255.255.255.0)

You will also need the network (I will use 192.168.1.0)

iface eth0:0 inet static

address 192.168.1.1

netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
network 192.168.1.0

Save the file, exit back to bash and type
/etc/init.d/networking restart
wait a short time for the network to update and you should be able to ping the new IP.

I just had the “call to undefined function curl_init” error in PHP and was at a loss how to fix it.

I knew immediately what it was (cURL allows you to read a website via a script) but couldn’t find a way to fix it via google.

Here’s the solution on debian ubuntu php 5

sudo apt-get install php5-curl
sudo apache2ctl graceful

Once that was done all was well.

Simple solutions are wonderful aren’t they?
