Today I did a clean install of Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS 64 bit and upgraded my site

Over the past couple of days my site has been offline as I have been optimising it.

I have installed:

  • Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS 64 bit
  • MariaDB rather than Mysql database server
  • Nginx web server

The site definitely feels more responsive to me but that is purely subjective. I have tried doing speed tests but they vary even between page refreshes.

I have optimised the site to client side cache as much as possible for faster reloads. I also stripped out the ?ver= on a lot of files which prevented browser caching.

The site is now completely HTTPS based and redirects http:// to https:// automatically. I have also enabled HTTP/2 which gives a massive performance boost to clients that can use it. Spoiler: these days, most browsers can utilise HTTP/2.
